Der Nachbar

The Neighbour

Drama | 1992

A Vienna suburb, an old district with dilapidated buildings alongside the city railway tracks. Rudolf Pawlik, an old man, has lived a quiet and happy life here, void of any agitation or danger. But everything changes when his neighbour dies and new tenants move in: Herbert, a small-time crook who likes to act big, Michaela, his young girlfriend from the Czech Republic, and her daughter Anges. Pawlik takes an instant disliking to Herbert, but he falls in love with Michaela at first sight. His feelings turn into an obsession and the friendly old gentleman is now ready to do anything for his love. Herbert is, of course, his enemy and blocks his path at every juncture…
THE NEIGHBOUR is the story of four people, their relationships, their longings and dependencies – all hidden behind a veil of normality, which disintegrates little by little. This is a film about changing emotions – love and money and how they are linked to each other.
